Phonics: Today, students reviewed the “oo” sound, letter, and song. Students completed an activity to practice identifying and printing words that contain the “oo” sound.

Lunch/ Recess 1

Math: Today, students continued learning about Place Value. Students practiced creating groups of 10 by circling 10 objects. Students completed an activity that involved creating groups of 10 and including the remainders as 1s in order to represent two digit numbers. Students used pictures, numerals, and charts to display their findings. Students discussed how groups of 10s could be counted more quickly than counting a large group of objects by 1s.

Unit of Inquiry: Today, students created planet Earth using blue and green colours. Students discussed how Earth is the only planet that we know can support life, because it allows us to grow food, and has a source of water. We also discussed how the ozone layer protects us and supports life on planet Earth.

Taking Action

Action is a very significant aspect of the IB learning process. In the PYP Program, students will engage in 6 Unit of Inquiries (UOI) throughout the school year, with each unit being approximately 6 weeks long. During each UOI, 3 students from the class will be assigned as the “Action Stars”, which means that they are encouraged to use what has been learned and apply it to the “real world.” The purpose of this initiative is to help further knowledge about what has been learned within the classroom. Example: If we are learning about recycling, students might go home and tell you that they want to implement a recycling program with you at home, or they may do something simple like telling you that something you were throwing in the garbage may be recycled. Students who are not assigned this role for the current UOI being taught are still encouraged to show ACTION! Action comes in many forms; it might be something small to something very large, but as long as the children understand the concepts, action is important no matter the size!
