Day 74

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year,

Assembly: Today, we had a special Awards Assembly. Izyan and Neel received our Communicator Awards for the month of December. Congratulations Izyan and Neel!

Calendar: Today’s calendar was led by Mateo. Great job Mateo!

Phonics: Today, students reviewed the Long and Short “U/u” sounds. Then Krish, Armaan, and Jack completed their Show and Share. Thank you for bringing in an item with your assigned sound!

Spelling: Today, students completed their monthly spelling test. Students are developing strategies for sounding out and recording the sounds that they hear. Students are also finding ways to focus their attention when given a specific task. Well done everyone!

Lunch/ Recess 1

Reading Buddy Movie Theatre: Today as a special treat, our Reading Buddies came to visit us for a Christmas story and movie. We compared the book and the movie of “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” When we made a comparison, we found that there were both similarities and differences.

Spirit Wear: We had some great outfits today for Red, White, and Green Day! Our class also placed 3rd in the Door Decorating Competition. Great job SK students!!

Calendar: Today’s calendar was led by Sianna. Great job Sianna!

Phonics: Today, students reviewed the Long and Short “U/u” sounds. Frosty the Snowman gave us a word puzzle to practice identifying words with both “U/u” sounds.

Lunch/ Recess 1

Math: Today, students practiced some of the addition strategies that we have been learning so far. Students practiced reading and writing addition sentences both vertically and horizontally.

Unit of Inquiry: Today, students read a book called 50 Below Zero. Students are recognizing word patterns in books, and are using this information to predict what will come next in the story. We also finished decorating our classroom door.

Christmas Concert: Our class watched the afternoon performance of the Grade 3-8 Christmas Concert. We practiced being attentive audience members.

Calendar: Today’s calendar was led by Eric. Great job Eric!

Phonics: Today, students reviewed the Long and Short “U/u” sounds. Students used PlayDoh and whiteboards to practice drawing and sculpting the letter “U/u.” After this, students created an object that contained the “U/u” sound.

French: Please see Mlle Jessica’s blog for more information.

Journals: Today, students wrote about what their family is planning to do over the holidays. Students are practicing writing about the past, the present, and the future.

Lunch/ Recess 1

Math: Today, students practiced some of the addition strategies that we have been learning so far. Students practiced using pictures to illustrate addition sentences. Students also practiced their doubles facts (1 + 1, 2 + 2…6 + 6).

Unit of Inquiry: Today, students decorated our door by taking “sELFies.” Students had a lot of fun posing in the elf photo booth!

Taking Action

Action is a very significant aspect of the IB learning process. In the PYP Program, students will engage in 6 Unit of Inquiries (UOI) throughout the school year, with each unit being approximately 6 weeks long. During each UOI, 3 students from the class will be assigned as the “Action Stars”, which means that they are encouraged to use what has been learned and apply it to the “real world.” The purpose of this initiative is to help further knowledge about what has been learned within the classroom. Example: If we are learning about recycling, students might go home and tell you that they want to implement a recycling program with you at home, or they may do something simple like telling you that something you were throwing in the garbage may be recycled. Students who are not assigned this role for the current UOI being taught are still encouraged to show ACTION! Action comes in many forms; it might be something small to something very large, but as long as the children understand the concepts, action is important no matter the size! Please check out our Action board in our classroom to see all our fabulous learners.
